What are the business triggers that cause organizations to implement cloud computing? According to IT in Canada’s expert technology panel, factors such as the need to support more end user locations, to manage diverse requirements, and do so faster than ever, drive organizations to embrace the cloud concept.
In this, the first of our five-part cloud computing series, IT in Canada brings together three cloud pioneers to collect their thoughts on the technology. The panel includes Doug Jones, business unit executive, cloud computing for IBM Canada, Mark Kovarski, senior business technology consultant for Bank of Montreal, and Rene Marquis, IT director for the Laval School Board.
The Bank of Montreal is implementing cloud computing to support end users in new locations, Kovarski says. As the financial institution grows, it needs computer infrastructure to support workers and customers cost effectively.

“One of the areas was going global,” Kovarski says. Issues associated with the need to rapidly ramp up (and potentially, ramp back down) secure desktops can be more easily managed through in a cloud environment. Kovarski asks, "instead of hosting the virtual desktops yourself, why not spin up desktops for the duration of an engagement in the cloud and then tear them down and get the bill at the end of the day, just like a true utility?"
