In a boing boing article by Cory Doctorow an FBI counterterrorism agent tells how TSA insists he be screened when not carrying a firearm, yet allows him to pass unscreened when he's armed.

And when he's packing a pistol, TSA insists he not have a knife, because knives aren't allowed on commercial aircraft.
This is the kind of genius only a bureaucracy can achieve.
And it brings to mind North's first law of bureaucracy:
"There is no bureaucratic rule which, if consistently enforced, will not produce a preposterous result as a limit."
North's second law of bureaucracy:
"Over time, some bureaucrat will pursue a rule to the limit of law #1."
