About 14 months ago I wrote a blog titled UC Reflections on my impressions of where UC was going and what was holding it back. In reviewing that blog I must say that some things have changed but there is still a long road ahead. I had four points; UC is largely misunderstood, we are at the beginning of UC acceptance, UC is not a one-time implementation and finally it is here and it is a bona fide communications solution that will help organizations succeed.
First, UC is largely misunderstood. IT vendors have done a better job of getting their message out, particularly to medium and large organizations. Small enterprises may have a better understanding of IP and some of its benefits, but for the most part the overall concept is lost. Presence is still a problem.
Two, we are at the beginning of end users accepting UC. I believe that is changing at the high end of the market. Those that have adopted UC typically enthuse about their expectations being exceeded. However, many organizations are still kicking tires and trying to get a feel for what UC can do for them. There are several reasons for this, including the economy and a lack of solid information on ROI. As the economy turns the corner more organizations will be willing to invest in UC.
Three, UC is not a one-time implementation. Well, that certainly has not changed. Integrating the whole suite of UC applications (whether hardware or software) is too difficult to manage at one time. Organizations will continue to adopt the applications that are best suited to their requirements.
Four, UC is here to stay and does indeed offer organizations good value. I am sticking with this statement.
