In ITMD’s "cloudfingr" research, we have been profiling Canadian-headquartered suppliers of cloud services. We began with SaaS suppliers, and are now investigating suppliers of IaaS/PaaS, cloud-related tools and infrastructure and cloud services. This allowed us to look separately at suppliers targeting large enterprises (tools/infrastructure, IaaS/PaaS) and those whose reach extends further into the SMB market (SaaS, services).
Within our research, we looked at how SaaS vendors support their applications – and found that the IaaS and SaaS communities are very tightly linked.
As part of our profiling of the Canadian SaaS community, we asked its members where they run their applications. Two-thirds of our initial group of 46 provided us with useable data – and as this figure shows, the group is evenly split between IaaS and internally-owned servers.

Within the IaaS group, Amazon Web Services is dominant as a provider, supplying nearly 70% of Canadian-HQ SaaS vendors using IaaS to host their applications. Azure, Rackspace, and Savvis also have some presence within this community.
