To date, technology barriers have stood in the way of HD voice communication between fixed-line and mobile operators, which deploy different codecs. The new feature bridges the disparate HD “islands” by enabling transcoding in the XConnect multimedia interconnection hub.

“Secure and scalable end-to-end IP interconnection is essential for the delivery of IP services, such as HD voice,” Mr Wilkinson said. “Joining the federation removes the technical and commercial burdens of having to create direct IP interconnects with other service providers.”

The resulting interconnection offers new revenue opportunities for fixed and mobile service providers, as well as improved call quality for more users.

Capitalizing on the trend toward HD voice across all networks, the new feature enables mobile operators using the AMR-WB codec to participate and allows fixed operators to connect HD voice calls with mobile endpoints.

“XConnect is the first to market with hub-based HD voice interconnection services and the first to offer hub-based HD voice transcoding,” noted Mr Wilkinson.

Interconnecting to XConnect gives immediate access to more than 140 networks.

“The introduction of transcoding will enable our customers to expand the reach of their service beyond their network boundaries, meaning that their customers can benefit from HD calls to greater number of telephone numbers,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“For customers (end users), the service will be transparent. As adoption of HD voice grows and more service providers join the HD Alliance, these end users will enjoy higher quality and clearer voice calls.”
