Very interesting article on Workopolis about 10 doomed industries, from costume rentals, to publishing, to photo finishing...the article gives forecasted declines in revenues and number of establishments, and goes well beyond buggy whip manufacturers! It includes wired telephone operations, but notes that our telcos are well established in wireless already.

Publishing is pretty obvious, especially for those of us in the industry.

Ask anyone under 40 when they last read a print newspaper. I've read
that the New York Times loses 100,000 subscribers a year... to death. They die and aren't replaced.

Much of the problem with PUBLISHING is those in "print" think they're in PRINT PUBLISHING when they are in fact in information distribution and entertainment (or is that infotainment.) Bottom line, they're just a little confused about the true value ... which lies NOT in the medium but the message
